Our History

background to the project

Pavilion Dance South West (PDSW) is a registered charity (1111641) dedicated to transforming communities though Dance.

Communities might be professional choreographers, dancers, producers, young people, or people living with dementia.

PDSW projects grow from one blueprint: to enable communities to enjoy creativity and wellbeing offered through dance. We approach people, projects, and places with imagination and ambition. We believe that dance is for everyone and want all people and bodies to be visible throughout our work.

We run dance programmes promoting and supporting the sector across the South West and the wider UK. In our Bournemouth-based venue we present live dance performances from some of the most exciting and innovative companies around, screenings, exhibitions and more than 40 dance classes every week.

PDSW pitched to National Dance Network (NDN) in 2013 to run British Dance Edition (BDE) and was thrilled to be successful and bring it to Bournemouth.  Over time it became clear that there was a need to shift the BDE formula based on feedback and changing times. Members of NDN gave a lot of time and thought to this and developed a longitudinal programme, Surf The Wave, to work closely with artists, producers and promoters to consider the touring and showcasing of dance in the UK and what it should be like in the future. This programme incorporates a UK Dance Showcase which is the first iteration of a UK-focussed dance showcase.  This UK programme is led by PDSW. The international dance touring and showcasing strategy is led by Dance4.
